About English Wine
Although the UK was considered an epicentre for viticultural practices back in the Roman times, English wine today is very much considered an emerging category. Most of the 6 million bottles produced annually across England and Wales are sparkling, with still wines gaining in popularity as the climate becomes more temperate. The majority of the UK's 700 vineyards are based in the South of England, with Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire particularly excelling in both quantity and quality.
About your guides
Katrina Smith - Wine Guide. Katrina has lived in Hampshire for 7 years and during this time has become greatly involved with the English wine industry. Her journey in wine started in 2011 in the South of France where she helped out with a local grape harvest. Since then, Katrina has worked in retail, shipping and tourism, with her most recent role in education at Hambledon Vineyard in Hampshire. Katrina completed her WSET Diploma in 2018, picking up the Louis Jadot prize for outstanding results and the McNie Trophy for best tasting marks globally. Now enrolled onto the Master of Wine course, Katrina is slowly coming to terms with her unrelenting study (and wine) addiction. She can't wait to introduce you to her favourite producers and showcase the very best of Hampshire production.

About the producers
Founded by Jacob Leadley in 2015, Black Chalk has 30 acres of vineyards and a new state of the art winery, all located in the picturesque Test Valley near Stockbridge. Jacob brings a wealth of traditional method winemaking experience, having worked at Hattingley Valley for 7 years before launching Black Chalk.
Augusta and Robert Raimes are the fifth generation of the family to farm their Hampshire land, which includes 10 acres of vines since 2011. Situated near Cheriton, Raimes produce three sparkling wines including a Classic blend, Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs.
Founded in 1952, Hambledon Vineyard in Hampshire is England’s oldest commercial vineyard, producing traditional method wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Traditionally planted with Germanic grape varieties, the estate was re-planted in 2005 when owner and MD Ian Kellett saw the potential for Champagne style sparkling wine production in the UK.
